What is it for?
Bactrim DS (Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole) is a mixture of two different antibiotics. This makes it useful for treating many different types of infection caused by bacteria. Doctors may prescribe it to patients to treat middle ear infections, intestinal infections, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, travellers' diarrhoea and many other infections listed here. However, antibiotics will not work for viral infections.

How do you use it?
Bactrim DS (Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole) tablets should be taken exactly as your doctor tells you. You might be told to take it twice per day, however sometimes patients treating severe lung infections will be prescribed a larger dose (usually 4 times per day). Remember to drink a glass of water with each tablet, as this will make it easier for you to swallow it. It is very important that you keep taking this antibiotic medicine until you have finished the full amount prescribed by your doctor. If you stop taking it too early, your infection may worsen.

Any side effects?
Bactrim DS (Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole) might cause you to experience side effects. If you are worried about this, have a chat with your doctor before you start taking the medicine. You might notice some of the following side effects:

  • Stomach upset
  • Appetite loss
  • Pain affecting the tongue
  • A ringing noise in the ears
  • Feeling tired

Tell your doctor about all side effects you notice. You have to go and see your doctor straight away if you notice a sore throat, fever, aches, hallucinations, changes in urination or any other side effects which have not been listed here.

*Precautions*
Bactrim DS (Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole) might make your skin more sensitive to light. Because of this, you are advised to avoid tanning booths or exposure to the sun. Remember to apply sunscreen and protective clothes if you are going to be outside for a long period of time.

Most doctors will not normally prescribe this medicine to children.
