What is it for?
Bimat Eye Drops (Bimatoprost) are used by patients with open angle glaucoma to reduce eye pain and loss of vision. The drops increase the amount of fluid that flows out of the eye to stop it from building up and increasing pressure inside the eye. If glaucoma is allowed to progress it can cause severe vision loss or even damage to the retina or optic nerve. Bimatoprost also has the effect of increasing the length and thickness of the eyelashes when applied directly to the lashes using an applicator designed for this purpose. Your doctor may also prescribe its use for other unlisted reasons.

How do you use it?
It is important to follow the directions your doctor gives you and the documentation included with the packaging while using Bimat Eye Drops (Bimatoprost) to get the best results. Most patients use the medicine once a day by tilting the head back, gently pulling down the lower eyelid of the effected eye, holding the bottle over the eye, and dispensing one drop. Slowly close the eye to spread the medicine and keep it closed for thirty seconds so that it has enough time to be absorbed into the eye. If you wear contact lenses, always remove them before using the drop and wait fifteen minutes before reinserting them. If you are using the drops on your eyelashes, apply one drop to an applicator and gently brush it through the upper eyelash of one eye. Always use a separate brush for each eyelash and never apply the medication to the lower eyelashes. Observe the solution prior to each use to make sure it is not cloudy, discoloured, or does not have any suspended particles as this may indicate contamination. Always ask your doctor if you have any questions about using the medicine to prevent any unnecessary health complications from occurring.

Any side effects?
Bimat Eye Drops (Bimatoprost) may result in some side effects such as:

  • Dizziness
  • Dry or watering eyes
  • Mild burning or stinging in the eye
  • Feeling of a foreign object in the eye

Always call your doctor if any serious or worrying side effects occur to make sure the necessary changes are made to your frequency of application to prevent further health problems. Serious side effects that may occur are increased sensitivity to light, unusual vision changes, severe swelling or redness surrounding the eye, intense eye pain, or discharge from the eye. In more serious cases you may also be instructed to seek immediate medical attention.

*Precautions*
Bimat Eye Drops (Bimatoprost) should not be administered to patients who are breastfeeding, under the age of eighteen, allergic to bimatoprost, or who have had a bad reaction to similar treatments in the past.
