Clomipramine 50mg Tablet 10

What is it for?
Clonil (Clomipramine) is used to treat patients who have depression. It is a type of medication known as a tricyclic antidepressant that re-adjusts the levels of certain chemicals in the brain to prevent symptoms that are normally associated with depression. These may include problems such as feelings of guilt, worthlessness, anxiety, fatigue, or physical pain. Some doctors have found this medicine to also be effective for treating symptoms of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) such as intense anxiety about certain behaviours or actions. Your doctor may instruct it to use the medicine for the treatment of other unlisted conditions, as well.

How do you use it?
Clonil (Clomipramine) should always be taken according to your doctor’s instructions. Most patients are usually prescribed one tablet to be taken each day. When you are taking the tablets you should swallow them whole and unaltered with a full glass of water. You do not need to eat before taking the medicine, but it may be helpful to have a snack if you get an upset stomach or nausea. Never crush the tablets or chew them while taking them as this may destroy or even change their effects in some cases. If you have any questions about how to take the medicine or your prescription, be sure to ask your doctor before using it to prevent any unnecessary or unexpected complications.

Any side effects?

As with any medicine, the use of Clonil (Clomipramine) may cause side effects in some patients such as:

  • Dry mouth or unpleasant taste in the mouth
  • Upset stomach, constipation, or diarrhoea
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Increased sweating
  • Unusual changes in weight
  • Anxiety or insomnia
  • Memory problems or trouble concentrating
  • Reduced sex drive, impotence, or trouble having an orgasm

Stop using the medicine and call your doctor as soon as possible if you encounter any symptoms that worry you or are very intense to make sure any necessary changes are made to your dosage or application frequency. These may include confusion, drowsiness, tremors, increased heart rate, chest pain, painful urination, stiff muscles, hallucinations, or seizures. Your doctor may also instruct you to seek emergency medical attention in serious cases or if your symptoms are life threatening.

Clonil (Clomipramine) should never be used by patients who are under eighteen years old, allergic to tricyclic antidepressants, who have had a bad reaction to similar medications, or who have irregular heartbeats, manic episodes, heart block, closed angle glaucoma, low potassium levels in the blood, urinary retention, who have recently had a heart attack, or who have taken an MAOI medication in the last two weeks. You should also tell your doctor if you have a history of suicidal thoughts, psychotic illness, bipolar disorder, an enlarged prostate, an underactive thyroid, a tumour affecting the adrenal gland, porphyrias, chronic constipation, low blood pressure, glaucoma, risk of seizures, heart disease, or liver disease. These conditions may cause unexpected complications requiring special alterations to your treatment.
