What is it for?
Dutagen (Dutasteride) is used to treat prostate and urination problems. If you are affected by benign prostate hyperplasia (an enlarged prostate), your doctor may prescribe this medication to relieve symptoms (such as frequent urination or difficulty urinating). These capsules work by reducing the size of the prostate. Besides treating benign prostate hyperplasia, these capsules might even help to lessen the chance of you needing surgery. Medical researchers have also conducted clinical trials for use of this drug in preventing male pattern baldness (hair loss).

How do you use it?
Dutagen (Dutasteride) comes as capsules. Swallow each capsule whole with a glass of water. You shouldn't chew or crush them. Before you start taking this medicine, you have to see your doctor, so that you can be told the right dose. Your doctor will decide the best dose for you, based on your medical history and on your condition. Usually, doctors tell their patients to take it once per day, with or without food. Some patients will notice an improvement in their symptoms after 3 months of taking this drug, but it can take 6 months or more before the full benefits of this medicine are noticed.

Any side effects?
Dutagen (Dutasteride) might cause some side effects. Your doctor will talk about this with you before you start treatment with this medication. Some commonly reported side effects include:

  • Erection problems
  • A reduced sex drive
  • Difficulty ejaculating
  • A reduction in the quantity of semen ejaculated
  • Tenderness or swelling of the breasts

Tell your doctor if you notice any side effects, especially if they become serious. Before you start taking this medication, ask your doctor about the risk of severe side effects. Although this is less common, there is still a slight risk. See your doctor straight away if you notice peeling of the skin, lumps in the breast or a discharge from the nipples.

These tablets are not meant for women. Pregnant women or women who may become pregnant should never handle the capsules, as doing so may cause a small amount of medication to be absorbed through the skin.

While you are taking these capsules, and for a period of at least 6 months after you finish treatment, you must avoid donating blood, so as to ensure that your blood (which may contain traces of the medication) is not given to a pregnant woman.
