What is it for?
Azopt Eye Drops (Brinzolamide) are used to treat patients who have open angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. The drops decrease pressure within the eye by reducing the amount of fluid inside it. This action can reduce eye pain, loss of vision, or even prevent potential damage to the retina or optic nerve. Your doctor may also recommend the use of this medication for the treatment of other unlisted conditions.

How do you use it?
It is important to follow your doctor’s directions and those included with the medication while using Azopt Eye Drops (Brinzolamide) to make sure you are using it correctly and to get the most effective results. Most patients are recommended to administer the drops three times each day, but your doctor’s instructions for you will be determined by your individual age, weight, health condition, and the severity of your symptoms. To use the medicine tilt your head back, pull down the lower lid of the eye being treated, hold the bottle over the eye, and dispense one drop. Close the eye slowly to spread the medicine over the eye and keep it closed for thirty seconds to allow it to be absorbed. If you wear contact lenses be sure to remove them before using the drops. You are also recommended to wait fifteen minutes before reinserting them. Make sure to examine the solution before each use to make sure it is not cloudy, discoloured, or have particles floating in it as this may indicate it is contaminated. Ask your doctor any questions you have about the medicine before using it to prevent any accidents or misuse.

Any side effects?
As with any medicine, the use of Azopt Eye Drops (Brinzolamide) may cause side effects in some patients. These may include the following:

  • Headache
  • Dry eyes
  • Mild stinging or burning sensation in the eye
  • Blurry vision or double vision
  • Feeling of a foreign object in the eye
  • Upset stomach or diarrhoea
  • Bad taste in the mouth
  • Mild nausea
  • Mild back pain

Stop using the drops and call your doctor immediately if any serious side effects that worry you appear. These may be severe pain or swelling of the eye, crusting or drainage from the eye, sensitive skin, easier bruising, fever, flu symptoms, chest pain, intense stomach pain, or jaundice. These conditions may require reduced dosages, reduced application frequency, or even emergency medical attention in serious cases to prevent more complications from occurring.

Do not use Azopt Eye Drops (Brinzolamide) if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, under the age of eighteen, allergic to sulphonamide medications, have had a bad reaction to similar treatments in the past, if you have high chloride levels in the blood, severely reduced kidney function, or decreased liver function. You should also tell your doctor if you wear contact lenses, have dry eyes, diabetes, pigmentary glaucoma, pseudoexfoliative glaucoma, closed angle glaucoma, or conditions affecting the cornea as these can cause unexpected complications during treatment.
