What is it for?
Selgin (Selegiline) is used by people with Parkinson's disease to help control and treat their symptoms. It is sometimes used with other medications to treat this condition. These tablets work by preventing a chemical called dopamine (a chemical in the brain that the body needs to control movement) from being broken down. Patients with Parkinson's disease usually have a low level of this chemical. It can also help to stop the effects of other Parkinson's disease medication from wearing off (Levodopa and Carbidopa). This drug is in a class of medicines called MAO inhibitors.

What is it for?
Selgin (Selegiline) tablets are swallowed whole together with a full glass of water. To find out the right dosage, you have to go and see your doctor for a quick medical examination. Your doctor will decide the best dosage for you, and it's important that you listen to his or her instructions. Never take more than the amount you have been prescribed. Your doctor might need to change your dosage every now and then, so it's really important that you listen carefully if he or she gives you any new dosage instructions. Remember, never take more than the prescribed amount, as doing this can be very dangerous. It usually takes a few weeks of taking this medicine before it starts to work fully.

Any side effects?
Selgin (Selegiline) might cause side effects in some patients. Don't be too worried about this, as most side effects are not that serious. However, you should have a talk with your doctor about the risk of side effects before you start taking these tablets. Some commonly reported side effects include:

  • Pain in the stomach
  • Feeling dizzy or lightheaded
  • Drowsiness
  • Purple marks on your skin
  • Dry mouth

The side effects listed above are normally mild, but you still need to tell your doctor about any side effects that you notice. Although it's rare, there is still a small risk of more serious side effects. You must go and see your doctor or visit the hospital right away if you notice a severe headache, sweating, body movements which you have no control over, hallucinating, feeling confused or any other side effects that haven't been mentioned here.

This drug can cause a serious interaction if taken alongside other MAO inhibitors or antidepressants. You must inform your doctor if you are taking any of these medications, or have taken them within the 2 weeks prior to commencing treatmetnt with this drug.
