What is it for?

Tenormin (Atenolol) is a beta-blocker that operates by relaxing the blood vessles and slowing your heart rate. This effect makes it useful for treating high blood pressure (hypertension) or severe chest pain (angina). Some doctors may also prescribe it to reduce alcohol withdrawal symptoms or prevent migraine headaches. In some cases it may be used to treat anxiety disorders.

How do you use it?

Speak with your doctor before beginning to use Tenormin (Atenolol) so that the best dosage can be determined based on your health and symptoms. It is normally taken once each day at a dosage of one or two 25mg tablets. These can be taken with or without food and should be swallowed with a large glass of water. Be aware that it may take one or two weeks of treatment before the full effects of the medication are seen. Do not stop taking the medicine or make any adjustments unless instructed to do so by your doctor. It is also important to inform your doctor about any other medications you begin using while undergoing treatment in case they have negative interactions. Never stop taking the medicine all at once, it should be reduced gradually to prevent withdrawal symptoms and other potential complications.

Any side effects?

Tenormin (Atenolol) may cause some side effects during treatment. These are generally mild and may include fatigue, drowsiness, insomnia, anxiety, decreased sex drive, or impotence. If you notice signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling, hives, a skin rash, or difficulty breathing, go to the hospital emergency room immediately. Also inform your doctor if you experience any rare side effects that may occur while using this medicine including severe nausea, trouble breathing, arrhythmias, depression, cold hands or feet, discoloured urine or stools, or faintness. These require immediate adjustments to prevent any more problems from occurring.

Do not begin using Tenormin (Atenolol) if you have heart failure, serious heart defects, hypotension, or blood diseases. Also inform your doctor if you have a history of asthma or other respiratory diseases, myasthenia gravis, an overactive thyroid, or diabetes. These conditions may require adjustments determined by your doctor to prevent potential health problems from occurring.

Do not drive or operate machinery while using Tenormin (Atenolol) as it may cause dizziness or confusion. It is also important to not use this medication if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. It is excreted through the breastmilk and may cause a slowed heart rate or other problems for your child.
